International Food Loss and Waste Awareness Day: Grand Magic Hotel gets committed
In France, 10 million tonnes of food are lost or wasted every year. This is a sad figure and the hotel industry isn’t exempt from responsibility in this area. The Grand Magic Hotel is very committed to this cause, and has launched a number of practical initiatives to raise awareness among children and adults alike. International Food Loss and Waste Awareness Day, inaugurated in 2020 by the United Nations (UN), is celebrated every 29 September.
What is International Food Loss and Waste Awareness Day?
Although the world produces enough food to feed its entire population, millions of people still suffer from hunger and malnutrition. Food loss and waste exacerbate this problem, by reducing the amount of food available.
Held every year in the autumn, World Food Waste Day aims to raise public awareness of the problem, while at the same time suggesting practical solutions to all those involved in the food chain.
Officially named International Food Loss and Waste Awareness Day, this UN initiative is designed to proactively promote sustainability, reduce world hunger and create more resilient and efficient food systems. It also gives all those involved the opportunity to suggest practical, sustainable solutions to reduce food waste.
How is the Grand Magic Hotel tackling food waste?
Waste can occur at any point in the supply chain:
- When the order does not reflect actual requirements.
- When there is poor storage or preparation of the food.
- On the plate, when customers don’t finish their meal.
The Grand Magic Hotel optimises its entire supply chain management. We rigorously select environmentally-friendly products, and prioritise local suppliers committed to sustainable practices. Our partnerships are with companies that share our values of eco-responsibility and quality.
In the same vein, our teams take strict measures to reduce the impact of plastic waste. Specifically, we are stopping the introduction of new single-use items in our hotel. With regard to those we already have, we are actively looking for sustainable alternatives.
As part of its ongoing campaign against food waste, the Grand Magic Hotel has a regular meal donation scheme with food going to the charity La Main Tendue.
World Clean Up Day: a worldwide campaign for a cleaner environment
World Clean Up Day is a global day on 21 September dedicated to combating pollution, uniting millions of volunteers in over 180 countries.
Every year, citizens, companies, associations and institutions get together to collect the rubbish littering our public spaces including beaches, forests, streets and parks. This international event is designed to raise public awareness of the importance of preserving our planet and to promote practical measures to reduce our environmental impact.
As well as cleaning up, World Clean Up Day is a call for global change, advocating more responsible waste management, a reduction in single-use plastics, and a collective awareness of the need to protect our ecosystems. Together we can make a difference and contribute to a more sustainable future.
